UNITAR and Global Surgery Foundation Sign Shared Vision Statement around Value-Based Healthcare in Rwanda

In January 2024, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Global Surgery Foundation signed a shared vision statement with members of the value-based healthcare (VBHC) expert working group in Rwanda.

The VBHC working group has been working alongside UNITAR and GSF since July 2022. The wider group includes members from Butaro Cancer Centre of Excellence, University of Global Health Equity, and Harvard Medical School’s Program in Global Surgery and Social Change.

The VBHC programme in Rwanda envisions improved health outcomes for patients through the implementation of the value-based healthcare approach.

Towards this end, we are launching three projects in February 2024 focused on gaining patient and provider perspectives. Based at Butaro Cancer Centre of Excellence, the project team will analyse patient outcomes related to breast cancer surgical treatment, assess gaps in surgeon training and management of breast cancer, and gain insight into the role of stigma in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

With this data, we will pilot interventions using a VBHC approach to improve breast cancer surgical care. UNITAR and the GSF are looking forward to working with their partners in Rwanda for patient impact.
